Everybody loves the classic look of a Land Rover, but few are as rare as this example. Collecting Cars has managed to get its hands on this 1998 Land Rover Defender that was part of the Tierra Del Fuego Camel Trophy. Running for 20 years between 1980 and 2000 (except for 1999), the Camel Trophy pitted teams from across the globe in a test of endurance and durability using Land Rovers. The first event involved six Germans driving three Jeep CJ6s across the Transamazonica Highway in Brazil. The following year competitors were given identical factory-supplied V8 Range Rovers painted yellow and plastered with Camel paraphernalia (Camel sponsored the race). Land Rover then become the only manufacturer allowed as teams from across the world competed in the yearly race that took place in exotic locations, from Borneo and Argentina to Siberia and Mongolia. Collecting Cars Collecting Cars Collecting Cars Collecting Cars This Land Rover up for grabs is one of two ex-Camel Trophy vehicles built by the Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations team for the 1998 race. It comes with the classic yellow paint job and numerous Camel advertisements and recently underwent a full rebuild. Under the hood is a 2.5-liter 300tdi turbodiesel inline-four engine with a five-speed manual transmission. This rare 4×4 features twin fuel tanks, Mantec steering and fuel tank guards, a Warn winch, a Brownchurch bull bar, Hella spotlights, a twin battery setup, and Michelin XZL tires. Safety Devices also installed a roll bar and external role cage specifically for the race. Inside the grey cloth seats have been restored and the cabin is equipped with heat and sound insulation. There’s also a period-correct stereo, a map light, and a passenger footwell-mounted washer bottle. Although the auction ended yesterday, the Land Rover didn’t sell and is available for the right price. collectingcars.com
