Yes, you read the headline correctly. Italian artist Salvatore Garau has just sold an invisible sculpture for a whopping $18,300. Now I’m no expert and understand art is subjective, but even the most die-hard art lovers have to admit this is going to far. The Io Sono (I am) sculpture from the 67-year-old artist is said to be in a “vacuum.” Speaking with news outlets Garau explained, “The vacuum is nothing more than a space full of energy, and even if we empty it and there is nothing left, according to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, that ‘nothing’ has a weight. Therefore, it has energy that is condensed and transformed into particles, that is, into us.” Ahh… sure thing. The sculpture can’t just be placed anywhere, with Garau claiming it needs to be displayed in a 5×5 foot square and must be on show in a private space. It also comes with a certificate of authentication, just so the new owner isn’t scared of the sculpture being a fraud. Unsurprisingly this isn’t the first invisible sculpture Garau has created, but it is the first he’s sold.
