Having recently re-watched Ford vs. Ferrari, anything to do with the great Caroll Shelby has my attention. So when I saw his 1966 Cobra 427 Super Snake is coming up for auction next month, I wet my pants a little. Of course, it’s well outside of my price range, but just being reminded of this majestic beauty is enough to bring a smile to my face.
Only two Super Snakes were ever made, with one kept by the hat-wearing Shelby as part of his personal colleciotn. The other was driven over a cliff by its owner, Tony Maxey, tragically killing him and destroying the vehicle. This makes the twin-supercharged 427 coupe the only one of its kind.
Originally built as one of 23 Shelby Cobra Competition Cars, the Super Snake went from the UK to America where it was updated so it could be declared street legal. This involved adding a windshield, mufflers, and bumpers to adhere to road regulations.
Powered by a 427ci V8 engine with two Paxton superchargers, the Super Snake creates a massive 800 horsepower and can hit 0 to 60 mph in just three seconds. The dark blue paint job of the CSX 3015 model Cobra also gives it an effortlessly cool look. Shelby even autographed the dash, making sure his name will forever be associated with this beast.
The last time this car was up for sale it fetched $5.1 million, with many experts predicting it could go for even more this time around.
