Last year Oklahoma-based custom car makers Classic Recreations revealed they were working on the first-ever carbon-fiber Mustang Shelby GT500. Fast forward nine months and Classic Recreations has delivered the goods.
The “Carbon Edition” Shelby GT500CR is one hell of a car. This reimagined version of the classic GT500 has a sleek carbon-fiber body supplied by Speedkore Performance Group and a more powerful engine. A stock 1978-79 Mustang chassis was scanned to create a 3D digital model. This was then transformed into the Mustang’s body using aerospace-grade carbon fiber.
Not only does carbon-fiber make the car lighter (weighing 600 pounds lighter than a standard GT500), but enables it to travel faster. This is also due to the 2.9-liter Whipple-supercharged Ford 5.2-liter Coyote V8 engine under the hood. Churning out a whopping 810 horsepower, Classic Recreations have built the ultimate lightweight racer.
Other notable features include a Tremec six-speed manual transmission, Detriot Speed dual adjustable coil-over suspension, tubular subframe connectors, high-performance Wilwood brakes, a roll bar, a hydraulic steering rack, and 18-inch aluminum wheels from American Racing with Michelin Z-rated tires.
The inside is fitted with a Lecarra leather-wrapped aluminum steering wheel, ProCar black leather seats, a Kicker audio system, and Kenwood media center and navigation. The interior is covered in black leather with red racing harnesses and several custom Shelby badges.
Only 25 of these custom carbon-fiber GT500s are up for grabs, selling for $298,000. Part of the proceeds from each Mustang sold will go to the Carroll Shelby Foundation.
