Football legend Diego Maradona’s rare 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera is on the market. The pristine automobile was purchased by El Diego when he moved to Spain and began playing for Seville in 1992.
This is one of only 1,200 Porsche 911 Type 964 Carrera 2 Convertible WLTs (Work Looks Turbo) built during a two-year production run. It retains the classic shape of the 911 and has a convertible soft top.
Under the hood is a 3.6-liter Carrera 2 engine that pumps out 250 bhp with a top speed of 124 mph. The Porsche also retains its original silver paint job and black leather interior.
Maradona would drive the Porsche to and from training and was famously stopped in the car by police for running a red light and hurtling through the city streets at 111 mph. The stories this car could tell.
Unfortunately, Maradona’s time in Seville is remembered more for his off-field antics. Renting the villa of Juan Antonio Ruiz Roman, Spain’s most famous bullfighter, Maradona was named captain of the team and kicked things off in style with a 3-1 victory over German powerhouse Bayern Munich in a pre-season friendly. It was down here from there, with El Deigo scoring just five goals in 26 games and becoming known more for his party lifestyle than football ability.
After just one year at Seville, Maradona was on the move, and so too was his Porsche. The car was sold to a private owner in Majorca where it remained for 20 years before passing through several French collector’s garages. Surprisingly, for a car that’s almost three decades old, the speedometer reads just 75,000 miles, with auction house Bonhams describing the 911 as in “practically original yet well-preserved condition.”
“We are delighted to present this quintessential 90s Porsche with its very colorful and unique provenance, which will appeal to many football enthusiast collectors worldwide,” explained Paul Darvill, Bonhams European auctions manager.
A must for any die-hard football fan, the 911 Carrera comes with several documents and logbooks signed by Maradona to prove its authenticity as the great man’s car.
