Iconic rapper Nas and Mass Appeal Chief Creative Officer Sacha Jenkins are teaming up with Showtime ahead of hip-hop’s 50th birthday for 3 years worth of programming. They’ll be readying for the “biggest birthday party in the world” by focussing on some of the greatest and most interesting stories to come from the first 50 years of the genre. Check out the first trailer below.
According to Variety, Nas and Jenkins (Producer/director of Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men) will focus on the culture, key participants, and stories from within the firebrand music style that will evolve via scripted shows, digital media, pods, and documentaries. Some of the projects already locked in for Hip Hop 50 include:
Hits From the Bong – a look at West Coast rap music Push it – focusing on women in hip-hop Rolling Like Thunder – detailing graffiti and street art Untitled Ralph McDaniels Project – a look back at iconic show Video Music Box Ricky Powell: The Individualist – profile on the great rap photographer
“There are so many more stories,” Nas told Variety. “I’m opening up with this, but Hip Hop 50 is a multi-tier initiative, created by Mass Appeal [in partnership with CBS Viacom], and we built this platform to ensure the anniversary of hip-hop is celebrated in a real iconic way, and that everybody should be involved with this. “This is something that’s coming up that we don’t want to just pass by like it’s small. This is the biggest birthday in the world. You’re going to see the stories from every element of hip-hop, whether it’s the street stories, whether it’s the MCing. Whatever it is, we want to celebrate and push this birthday party to the max.” Hip Hip 50 will debut later this year and will run through 2023 for the genre’s 50th birthday.
