The first trailer for Space Jam: A New Legacy has dropped, and boy oh boy is it exciting. The film stars LeBron James and is the long-awaited follow-up to surprise 1996 hit, Space Jam. The original starred Michael Jordan and focused on him teaming up with the Looney Tunes to win a basketball game. This sequel has a similar plot, but with a few key differences.
This time around the movie focuses on the relationship between James and his (fictional) son Dom. James wants him to play basketball but Dom wants to become a video game developer. When the two find themselves trapped in a virtual reality world controlled by an evil algorithm played by Don Cheadle, James is forced to compete in a basketball game to save his son. Banished to Tune World, he must form a team made up of famous Looney Tunes characters, including Bugs Bunny, Duffy Duck, and Porky Pig. This looks to be a lot of fun, with the trailer a vibrant and colorful mix of real-life action and animation. While James is no Will Smith, he handles himself well enough on film. There’s a lot of small cameos from classic Warner characters too, including King Kong, Yogi Bear, and the Iron Giant. We also get our first look at the Goon Squad, the team LeBron’s rejects must defeat. Along with LeBron, other NBA players to feature include Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis, Damian Lillard, Kyrie Irving, Chris Paul. and Draymond Green. Space Jam: A New Legacy will be released July 16 in theaters and on HBO Max.
