It’s like this car was made entirely for the NextLuxury website. It’s an electric luxury vehicle that goes off-road on four wheels and with all the interior comforts you expect from Mercedes Benz. What more could you want? Oh, I know, how bout a pair of headlamps that double as loudspeakers, because there’s nothing worse than asking, “did anyone bring a speaker?” “Emotive appearance, sure-footed on rough terrain and with future-oriented technology,” are the words used by Mercedes to describe their brand new electric car of extremes. Developing electric mobility with a thirst for adventure, the EQC 4×4² demonstrates that electrification doesn’t end when you leave the road network. No matter the terrain, the ECQ has the juice for any adventure.

Crafted by a small team of dedicated Mercedes Benz developers, this electric driving platform started on an EQC 400 4MATIC with a combined power consumption of 21.3-20.2 kWh/100 km; and combined CO2 emissions of 0 g/km. Yeah, you read that correctly, zero, zilch, nada, nothing. No carbon’s coming out of that tailpipe, oh wait, there isn’t one! This innovative electric car of extremes produced by a cross-departmental team under development engineer Jürgen Eberle aims “to combine modern luxury and sustainability with emotional appeal.” Describing the “electromobility” of the EQC 4×4², Markus Schäfer, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG, puts it succinctly for all to hear: “electric, progressive luxury goes offroad.”

“This drivable study clearly shows that alongside a passion for e-mobility, we at Mercedes-Benz lay a strong claim to leadership in this sector and will heighten the emotional appeal of this even further in the future.” Demonstrating a “love of adventure can be combined with lifestyle and sustainability,” the EQC 4×4² platform is capable of driving through all kinds of terrains. Going through sand in desert regions and on beaches, on rocky terrain and through mountain streams, nothing slows this Mercedes down. For those who need to bring extra gear with them, the standard model also allows trailer operation and roof-rack installation. There’s room for a roof-tent and inflatable dinghy, enabling even the most remote locations to be reached. But come on Mercedes, where’s the amphibious model?

With a riding height more than twice as high as a production EQC (140 millimeters), at 293 millimeters, the EQC 4×4² has a tremendous ground clearance made possible by converting to portal axles, which positions the wheels much lower down on the axle hubs. Combined with impressive approach and departure angles, never worry about catching your rear or bumper on the way down the dunes. Sporting a striking visual appearance, rounded off with a matte metallic gun-metal grey car film and the black wheel arch flares, not only is the EQC 4×4² capable, it’s as sexy as any other Mercedes Benz on the road (or off the road).

Oh, and those headlamps that double as loudspeakers, which they call lampspeakers; its sound experience with its own soundscape. Required by law under the Acoustic Vehicle Alert System, the sound experts at Mercedes Benz went a step further and created a more powerful version. Party on! As the third model in the 4×4² Mercedes Benz family, the Germans will have to compete with Tesla and the upcoming all-electric Hummer EV. With the electric SUV market growing every day, only one option takes luxury off-road without the emissions. For electric mobility with a thirst for adventure, the EQC 4×4² is the only choice.
