The trailer for Paul Verhoeven’s newest feature film Benedetta, set to debut at Cannes Film Festival later this year, has officially dropped. The director of sci-fi hits such as Starship Troopers, Total Recall, and the original RoboCop has switched genres entirely, with Benedetta being based on an actual 17th-century Catholic nun from central Italy who could reportedly perform miracles. She also happened to be a closeted lesbian, causing a ruffle in the nunnery. Check out the trailer below.
The film itself is based on the 1986 book, Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy, written by historian Judith C. Brown. This isn’t the first religious film Verhoeven has been developing, with the controversial director also trying to adapt a film based on his own book Jesus of Nazareth. Benedetta, originally titled Blessed Virgin, stars Virginie Efira (Elle), Charlotte Rampling (Melencholi), Daphné Patakia (Nimic), Lambert Wilson (The Matrix Reloaded), and Olivier Rabourdin (Taken 1 & 2). According to Deadline, the film is “…set in the late 15th century as plague ravages the land. Benedetta Carlini (Efira) joins the convent in Pescia, Tuscany as a novice who has been capable from an early age of performing miracles. Her impact on life in the community is immediate and momentous.” The official description of the film is as follows: A 17th-century nun in Italy suffers from disturbing religious and erotic visions. She is assisted by a companion, and the relationship between the two women develops into a romantic love affair. If it’s anything like Verhoven’s previous erotic films, expect lots of sex and some strange plot points. Benedetta will premiere at Cannes Film Festival later this summer, and will make its debut in French cinemas on July 9, 2021.
