It’s no surprise Formula 1 drivers are paid ridiculous amounts of coin. Their job, although a sport, is extremely dangerous and well-deserving of the salaries they earn. But in an age devastated by Covid-19, F1 salaries aren’t exactly as high as they once were.
Many teams have been forced to let staff go and rejig their teams. This has had an impact on many of the top driver’s salaries. The latest data from Sportrac details every racer’s yearly earnings from the sport and it makes for interesting reading. The likes of Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo have both taken pay cuts to move to Aston Martin and McLaren respectively, while current champion Lewis Hamilton is being paid $25 million less a season than last year.
Still, Hamilton is miles ahead of the pack when it comes to his salary. His closest competitor is the returning Fernando Alonso who is making just $20 million a season with Alpine. Factor in endorsements and other deals, and Hamilton is most likely making double his actual salary.
