It seemed only yesterday that I queried my friends about the Microbus sized hole in the Volkswagen motor vehicle lineup. With VW offering transporters, caddies, and crafter vans of all different sizes, we sat there wondering what happened to the Kombi, the classic Microbus. Whether taking a trip into the wilderness or packing up a couple of surfboards for a trip to the coast. Wherever your adventures took you, the VW Kombi Transporter Type 2 was the ideal people mover when it first arrived in the 1950s. So why haven’t we seen it back on the roads? Because VW has been quietly preparing for its grand return, but not as you know it.

Sporting a technology-packed cockpit with a roomy interior for up to 7 seated adults, this all-new, all-electric ID.BUZZ concept car sparks nostalgia and the imaginations of a whole new generation of Volkswagen owners. Driven by immense popular demand, Volkswagen has announced the ID.BUZZ concept for the United States, Europe and China. Set to begin production in 2022, VW revives an icon as we start to phase out fossil fuels to transition to a cleaner and greener world. The Kombi is back, baby! And according to VW, it’s okay to say “groovy” again. So, call me Austin Powers because this car is “groovy baby!” Taking after its iconic fuel-injected ancestor, its unique look takes inspiration from all the fond memories of a bygone era. Back when the revolution was not to be televised, Volkswagen was there with the Microbus.

“For me, the ID.BUZZ concept is the most beautiful and most exciting electric car in the world,” said Dr. Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board of Management for the Volkswagen brand, in Pebble Beach, Calif. “Our goal is clear: we want to make the fully electric, fully connected car a bestseller around the world. The iconic car of the electric age must be a Volkswagen.” Following on from the all-new ID.4 electric SUV moving from concept vehicle into production, the ID.BUZZ is the second EV contender set to “offer everything – and even more – than you have seen from other electric carmakers,” according to Diess. “And they will be much more affordable.”

Each EV uses the VW Modular Electric Drive kit, a group of components and chassis parts engineered to maximize the potential of electric driving and future technology. Upgrading from the 30 hp potential of the original VW Bus in 1950, the ID.BUZZ concept sports 369 hp from its electric motors on each axle. Also providing all-wheel drive, the 111 kWh battery pack in the MEB chassis gives drivers nearly 300 miles of estimated range. Combined with a VW fast-charge system, you can recharge to 80% in just 30 minutes.

“Fully committed to the future of mobility, and we want to reignite America’s love for VW,” autonomous driving tech is also set to feature in the ID.BUZZ, thanks to VW fully automated “I.D. Pilot” mode. But that won’t be arriving until sometime in 2025. It’s the seventh generation of the Microbus, and according to Dr. Diess, it’s the same car that “took you everywhere with your friends.” “A car but also a home on wheels, it was both reliable and unconventional, it was highly emotional…it was and still is a wonderful car.” Look out for the return of the Microbus, the ID.BUZZ.
