M. Night Shyamalan has been the master of the twist since the 1990s when The Sixth Sense premiered in theaters across the globe, so it’s strange that the twist seems to have been revealed in the trailer for his upcoming horror feature Old.

Based on the graphic novel Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters, Shyamalan has written, co-produced, and directed his latest feature (classic M. Night), marking this his fourteenth feature film. Shyamalan’s rocky filmography includes instant classics such as The Sixth Sense, Signs, and The Village, as well as critically panned films such as The Last Airbender, After Earth, and The Happening.

Shyamalan redeemed himself in the public eye by completing the Eastrail 177 Trilogy that he began with the groundbreaking superhero drama Unbreakable, and continued with the highly-praised Split and concluded with the long-anticipated Glass. It seems that Old is another step in the right direction. You can watch the trailer for the film below:

The official description for Old reads:

This July, visionary filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan unveils a chilling, mysterious new thriller about a family on a tropical holiday who discover that the secluded beach where they are relaxing for a few hours is somehow causing them to age rapidly … reducing their entire lives into a single day.

Between his takes on the afterlife, aliens, superheroes, and communal societies, M. Night has a lot to offer, and the combination of an all-star cast and Shyamalan’s recent string of home runs (though Glass was a mixed bag), Old seems like one of the filmmaker’s most promising hits yet.

Old arrives in theaters on July 22nd.
