No matter where you are in the great US of A, you’ll be able to take Volkswagen’s brand new 2021 ID.4 electric SUV for a spin when it launches in all fifty US states early next year. With a driving experience almost identical to a GTI, the ID.4 delivers “all the best things about VW in one package.” “Engineered, loaded and priced to win the hearts of SUV owners who are simply ready to go electric,” Scott Keogh, CEO of the Volkswagen Group of America believes the ID.4 will have American drivers falling in love with VW all over again.
Revealed on September 23, the all-new ID.4 electric SUV is the brands first long-range EV to be sold stateside. Set for localized production in Chattanooga starting 2022, VW is going all out for this compact SUV for the American market. Aiming to take on the Tesla Model Y, the ID.4 may fill the gap in the electric car market, by finding a sweet spot between both size and price. Sitting somewhere in the middle of the Chevy Bolt and the Electric Kona from Hyundai, the latest offering from VW cuts the cost compared to more boujee models like the Audi E-Tron and the Jaguar I-Pace. Offering all the hallmark features of Volkswagen, new drivers will receive three years of fast charging with Electrify America for no additional cost. Aiming to garner more customers from the largest segment in the US, the new ID.4 is aimed right at the American heartland. Expect a number of these to appear in the State of California, as the government begins efforts to ban new gas-powered cars in the Golden State by 2035.
Taking on VW’s newest platform in the form of the modular electric drive architecture (MEB), Volkswagen is returning to its roots somewhat, with the electric motor located at the rear, just like the original Beetle. Capable of producing 201 horsepower and 228 pound-feet of torque, the ID.4 82kWh RWD 1st Edition models will have a range of 250 miles with a full charge. For those who want a bit more power, VW said an electric all-wheel-drive variant with 302 hp would follow later in 2021.
Sporting an aerodynamic design, the nature of the car moves “towards the future with a nod to the past”. Removing the radiator grille, also like the classic VW Beetle, the car enhances its overall presence with a sculpted front bumper with large intake-like scoops and honeycomb accents. Inside we find all the modern bells and whistles including voice control, infotainment touch screens and in-car Wi-Fi capabilities when you subscribe to a data plan. Plus with a bunch of electronic safety systems, like an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC), you can drive with peace of mind.
Production is currently taking place at the German Zwickau factory, with future ID.4 manufacturing slated for the Volkswagen Chattanooga Assembly Plant in 2022. With $2 billion already invested in Chattanooga, shifting to local production will allow VW to offer a significant price discount for future American ID.4 customers. Dubbed the most important launch for Volkswagen since the Beetle, Scott is pretty excited for the release of the ID.4 when it hits the road in 2021. As for the rest of the world, we hear that Australia will be kept waiting until at least 2023, so do with that information as you will. Find out more on media.vw.com
